     By Emmanuel Udom

Death toll from the collapsed building in Lekki area of Lagos has risen to 22 people from the initial four, as at Wednesday, March 9.

Our correspondent gathered that an unidentified woman and her baby are among those that died in the incident.

Tragedy struck in the area on Tuesday, March 8, when a five-story building collapsed in the early hours of the day.

The number of people rescued has also risen from the initial four to 13 people as at the time of filing this report.

Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), had in a text message said that officials of the agency, fire fighters and the police were on ground to salvage the situation.

Our correspondent gathered that some persons are still trapped under the rubble of the collapsed building which is opposite Oando filling station by Chisco bus stop along the Lekki-Epe expressway corridor.

Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirming the incident, some persons have been rescued while search continues for others believed to be trapped under the collapsed building.

Speaking on the collapsed building, Eng Oreoluwa Fadayomi, National President, The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers said that it would be too early to speculate on the cause of the collapse of the building without proper investigations.
“However, from what I can deduce from my visit to the site of the collapsed building, I would say that it can likely be traced to a construction problem”, he said.
