Nothing is as transient as power; whether vied
for or attained by other means like influence, that the position was, is and
will be occupied by someone at every given time clearly indicates that it is an
ephemeral ‘stool’. So also is live.
Consequently, when ‘destined’ to attain a
position of authority, the best thing to do is, remember that it is a call to
duty, that goes along with numerous challenges, while being conscious that it
is with time frame.
Therefore, the good deeds and otherwise
recorded in favour or against one while in office become a veritable yard-stick
to assess him in and out of office. Remember the saying, “The voice of man is
the voice of God”.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent
of Police (ASP) and the current Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ogun
State Police Command, Abeokuta, may not have had the slightest opportunity of
meeting with former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Afeez Ringim, but the
erstwhile number one cop will forever remain an idol to Oyeyemi.
The reason is not far-fetched; Ringim’s
welfare package became the pillar of change that turned around Oyeyemi’s
fortune for good.
Visibly elated PPRO, who got confirmed as the substantive spokesperson for Ogun police command on November 3, 2016 by the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Ahmed Iliyasu, after holding sway in acting capacity for four months, cast his mind to when he enlisted into the police force in 1999, precisely on January 4, and shed tears of joy.
According to him, despite being a degree
holder, Oyeyemi, who was desperately in need of job as a panacea to dependence
on parents, was not overwhelmed by the degree and class ego, as he enlisted as
a constable at the Police College, Ikeja-Lagos.
“If I were to climb the ladder with that, no
miracle would have brought me near my current status. But I was greatly
favoured by Almighty Allah, using the then IGP Afeez Ringim.
“Ringim, through his visionary leadership
quality, knew there were some of us, degree holders, who enlisted as constables
and sought the approval of the Police Service Commission (PSC) to recommend us
for ASP special promotion course at the Police Staff College, Jos, where we
were for one year.
“On completion of the programme, as a
beneficiary of the welfare package, I was promoted to ASP and posted to Ogun
State Command as second-in-command to the state’s PPRO in 2013, a position I
held till July, 2016, when my then boss, Muyiwa Adejobi was promoted to the
rank of Superintendent of Police and moved to the Zone 2 Police Command,
Onikan, Lagos as Zonal PPRO”, Oyeyemi said.
He said: “The state Commissioner of Police,
Ahmed Iliyasu, graciously retained him from July, 2016 as acting PPRO and went
ahead to confirm him as substantive PPRO on November 3,2016.
Born in Iragbiji, the headquarters of Boripe
Local Government in the State of Osun, Oyeyemi attended Methodist Primary
School, Baptist High School, both in Iragbiji and proceeded to University of
Ilorin, Kwara State, for his post secondary education, where he bagged a B.A
(Hons) in Linguistics and graduated in 1995.
On enlistment into the police as a constable,
Oyeyemi previously served at Iponri, Ketu, Ikotun, Orile-Iganmu and Area “M”,
all in Lagos before he was recommended for the ASP special promotion course.
Oyeyemi, a devout Moslem, is happily married and blessed with children.
