A
Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Inspector General of Police
(IGP) Suleiman Abba to restore the security details of the Speaker of the House
of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.
This followed a suit filled by
Tambuwal challenging the withdrawal of his security detail among other
infarctions against his office.
He also asked the Court to stop the
Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers from impeaching him.
The court said that Abba erred in
law by withdrawing the security detail of the Speaker when he has not been
removed from office.
The IGP had while withdrawing Tambuwal
security defended the action through a statement by the Force Public Relation
Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu saying that the Speaker security personnel were
withdrawn because of his defection from his party that elected him speaker.
He cited the violation section 68
(1) g of the 1999 constitution as the basis for his action.
The terse statement of the Police
read: “In view of the recent defection by the right Hon. Aminu Tambuwal CFR the
Speaker of the House of Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from
the People Democratic Party to the
All Progressive Congress and having regard
to section 68 (1) g of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
as Amended, the Nigerian Police Force has withdrawn the Police personnel
attached to his office”.
It would be recalled that the
Speaker had on Tuesday October 28 this year, announced his defection from PDP
to APC but failed to resign as the Speaker of the House.
