The State Security Service (SSS),
has described the recent video purportedly released by the supposed Boko
Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau as fake.
The defunct Joint Task Force (JTF)
claimed Shekau had been killed during a clash between the insurgents and the
JTF, while another security source fingered the Cameroonian Gendarmes as his
killer when he escaped to one of their villages sharing border with Nigeria.
But few weeks after the military
claimed Shekau had been killed, the insurgents released a video where they
claimed he was alive and to prove this, a picture of Shekau was presented where
he was claiming responsiblity for attacks in Borno and states.
The spokesman of the Army, Brigadier
Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru told the defence correspondents that the military and
security operatives had begun investigating the authenticity, or otherwise, of
the video.
But a top SSS official who pleaded
anonymity had reportedly disclosed that the Department had concluded a thorough
analysis of the video and disclosed that the video recently released was fake.
The source explained that the SSS
based its conclusion on some vital points, including the fact that Shekau’s
previous appearances in previous videos were different from the last one.
The SSS official also disclosed that
the movement of the purported Shekau’s lips did not synchronise with the words
as pronounced, apparently betraying the recorded message, and making it
un-professionally manipulated.
The security operative also explained
that Shekau, in previous video appearances, usually started with a recitation
of a full verse of the Quran that sometimes could last up to five minutes, a
sequence the stand-in Shekau did not observe.
Continuing, the source said, “The
video was just to create unnecessary panic in the public.
“The fact is that Abubakar Shekau
was truly shot, critically injured and evacuated by his lieutenants to a
conventional hospital outside Nigeria. It is only time that will tell if he
survived, but what we know now is that, the video is as fake as it is.”
All efforts made to speak with the
Army spokesman did not yield fruitful result, as his lines were not available
while filing this report.
However, a security source, who
corroborated the report, said the SSS would issue a position statement on the
verification and investigation of the video.
