Joseph Mbu, the new assistant inspector-general
of police in-charge of zone 2 command is talking tough, threatening fire and
brimstone.
Mbu, an indigene
of Ikom in cross river state, south-south Nigeria told political thugs and
hired trouble makers to steer clear of all polling booths in Lagos and Ogun
states, or be prepared for trouble with the police, which will have his backing.
Speaking on
Wednesday at the Lagos police command headquarters in Lagos, tough-talking Mbu told
serving police officers in the two states to perform their duties
professionally without fear or favour before, during and after the up-coming
elections.
His words: I am now in charge at the driver’s
seat at the zone and I will defend any police officer intimidated or harassed while
on election duties and punish those who compromise on professional standards.
On the
accepted dressing code for the police, the AIG said that wearing slippers,
sandals or mufti, while with rifle by any police officer is not right.
He pleaded
with serving police officers from Lagos
and Ogun to work hard and ensure that the forth-coming elections are
violence-free and peaceful, so as to shame critics who think he was re-deployed
to Lagos from Abuja to do the bidding of the powers-that-be.
