Peter Maurer, president, International Committee
for Red Cross, Sunday in Lagos, south-west Nigeria dropped a bombshell.
Maurer told
some of the 800,000 Red Cross volunteers in Lagos that there is no material
reward or enticement for them.
His words: “Volunteerism is a humanitarian
service and government and donor agencies are not too excited about supporting humanitarian
works, since it is not a politically motivated project”.
Speaking on
his visit to the Lagos state branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the ICRC
leader however appealed to the Red Cross volunteers to continue with their
humanitarian service.
This is despite
the realities that humanitarian service is a thankless job.
