Fatai Owoseni, commissioner of police for Lagos, south-west
Nigeria Monday doused a protest by residents of informal settlements in the
state.
Owoseni, leading a retinue of police officers, admonished the
protesters that their demonstration “is not the way to go” in getting
government to balk on its plan to evict them.
He said, “There is a way to tender your problem to the
government for urgent response other than staging a protest.
Everyone has the right to own a home and you aware of what’s going
on in the state.
“But I will implore you to choose your representatives that will
communicate on your behalf.”
The protest was carried on from last Thursday, when the government
gave the dwellers 36-hours to address their grievances.
Taiwo Aiyedun, who received and addressed the protesters
last week, had promised Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode, would grant the protesters audience, but which had not been done.
As at the time of filing this report, no government officials
attended to the protesters who were in their hundreds.
Although, word got out
that representatives be selected among the aggrieved people to meet with the
government.
Ambode had vowed to within
seven days demolish shanties and slums built along various waterfronts in the
state in his bid to rid the state of crimes.
The governor alleged the waterfront shanties were being used as
criminal hideouts for kidnappers.
