Abu Ibrahim, chairman, senate committee on police affairs says 10,000 new recruits into the Nigeria police force will be the foundation for community policing.
Vicnuel check
shows that with an estimated 350,000 police workforce nationwide, keeping
180million people in close check in Nigeria, the recruits could be expected to police
the 774 local government areas of the country.
Ibrahim told journalists that with the lifting of suspension of
recruitment of the 10,000 personnel into the police. 9 personnel would be
recruited per local government area.
The senator noted that it was expected that in the next three
years, 30 police personnel would have been recruited per local government for
the community policing initiative.
The recruitment was put on hold following disagreement between the
Senate and the police service commission (PSC) on the modus operandi for the recruitment.
Recall that the upper chamber had in a letter weeks ago requested
the commission to suspend the exercise for alleged irregularity in the criteria
adopted.
However, vicnuel
findings showed that senate suggested that the recruitment should be carried on
local government basis.
