For importers
of aluminum profile and glass accessories at aluminum village in Dopemu area of
Agege in Lagos, south-west Nigeria, the fear of area boys could be the beginning
of wisdom.
This is because the importers are
forced by suspected social miscreants, popularly known as area boys to part
with N20, 000 collected illegally, before trailers loaded with goods are allowed
to off load.
Oladimeji Olanite, President, Aluminum
Profile, Glass and Accessories Retailers, (APGAR), dropped this hint over the
weekend during an exclusive chat with our correspondent at his office, located
within the village.
Speaking on
the menace of area boys and suspected cultists, Olanite traders at the village
are at the mercy of social miscreants, who take delight in intimidating,
breaking into shops, looting, raping and collecting illegal levies from the
traders.
According to
him, APGAR since 2013 has repeatedly called the attention of the Lagos state
police command to the embarrassing activities of the miscreants.
But, each
time any of the suspected area boys is arrested, the person could be set free,
where they will return to their criminal activities, even as the police at
Alabo Police station seem to be helpless.
He further
explained that pushed to the wall, members of his executive council have
concluded plans to set-up a security committee that will ensure the safety of
lives and property around the village, 24/7.
