Godfatherism scandal rocks police ASP promotion exam, nationwide

     By Emmanuel Udom

There are strong indications that allegation of godfatherism is presently rocking the recent examination conducted by the Nigeria Police Force to promote  deserving police officers to the rank of an assistant superintendent of Police, nationwide.

Vicnuel gathered that in July this year, some 50 serving police officers drawn from the rank-and-file across the federation were ordered to sit for the promotion examination, after their credentials were duly obtained by police authorities.

The examination began in July and was planned to end first week of December this year, where names of successfully officers could eventually be shortlisted for the final screening, which is expected to hold, December 14-19, this year across the federation.

But, sources disclosed that senior police officers saddled with the conducted of the examination may have dumped merit for mediocrity, as police officers who had ordinary pass, 3rd class or 2nd class, either at the polytechnics or the universities were shortlisted for the final screening.

A police source lamented to our correspondent that police officers who went to school either through self-sponsorship of sponsored by  police authorities, who obtained 1st class or distinction as the case maybe, were allegedly dropped from the final list, based on the allegation of godfatherism and bribery by the officers involved in the conduct of the examination.

With 50 police officers who sat for the ASP promotion examination, calculation showed that this  translates to 1,800 officers most of whom may be sidelined in the final screening process in favour of those who have allegedly given bribe or have godfathers to back them.

Olabisi Kolawole, force police public relations officer could not be reached on Saturday for official comment on this scandal.

However, a source said the aggrieved police officers are demanding for either the inclusion of all officers who took part in the final screening examination for the final screening based on merit or outright cancellation of the old process for a new one.
