Libyan Prime
Minister, Mr. Ali Zidan, has been kidnapped by armed men in Tripoli and taken
to an undisclosed location.
Wire reports said the Prime Minister was taken early
Thursday from a hotel by suspected former rebels.
The BBC and Al Alrabiya said Libyan government
officials have confirmed Zidan’s abduction.
The incident underscores the fluid state of security
in Libya since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
It is however unclear whether the Prime Minister’s
kidnap has any links with the US special forces operation in Tripoli last
weekend which led to the seizure of a wanted alleged terrorist, Nazih
Abdul-Hamed Ruqai also known as Abu Anas al Liby, wanted in connection with the
1998 bombings of two US embassies in East Africa.
Zidan was a former human rights attorney who returned
to Libya during the revolution that toppled Gaddafi, having spent decades in
exile in Geneva, Switzerland.
He was sworn in as Prime Minister about 11 months
ago.
