SSS arrests A-list kidnapper of foreigners in Nigeria

Nigerian security forces arrested one of the country's most wanted kidnappers involved in several local and foreign abductions in the Niger Delta region, the secret police said Wednesday.

Kelvin Obvrubie and four others were arrested on September 17 in a forest at Osubi area of Delta State, the director of State Security Service (SSS), Florence Ikanon, told reporters in Asaba, the state capital.

The suspects were linked to many robbery and kidnapping cases in the state.

She said the service had intensified efforts to arrest other fleeing members of the gang, adding that those arrested would be arraigned immediately investigations were concluded.

Kidnapping, usually for ransom or in furtherance of another crime, is rampant in the West African country, especially in the Niger Delta area.

More than 300 foreigners have been kidnapped in the Niger Delta region since 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed after ransoms were paid.
