It was a bad day for 22 beggars in
Kano, northern Nigeria as the sharia hisbah police officers arrested them for
allegedly violating the anti-begging law in the state.
Malam Mohammed Yusuf, public
relations officer, Kano state hisbah said
that out of the 22 beggars arrested, 11 of them were females, while the remaining
11 were children.
According to him, the
beggars were arrested while begging for money around hotels and brothels
located along Katsina road, in Kano; saying that the
board has screened those arrested and released the first timers among them on
bail.
He further added that “all those
found to be habitual beggars were referred to the board’s legal department for
further legal action. The spokesman also said that the board had received 277
different cases out of which over 150 were on marital matters”.
